2 Potential Disadvantages of Accepting Guest Posts at Your Blog

The internet is full of articles on advantages of accepting guest posts on your blog - It helps to keep your blog moving on with dynamic new content, your blog gains popularity, and ofcourse it helps you to develop good relationships with the fellow guest bloggers!

But, if you are one of those who credulously believe that accepting guest posts is all about those advantages, then you should take a look at the flip side too. Here, I am not trying to disparage you from accepting guest articles on your blog, rather I am trying to reveal the possibly negative side of accepting guest posts too often (all from my own personal experiences...)

Here are the two potential disadvantages:

1. You might become heavily dependent on guest bloggers

No doubt, guest posts are great for helping you to keep your blog updated with fresh content, but guest blogging should definitely not hinder your ability to write for your own blog. Remember, it's YOUR blog and it was your own writing pitch only that initially attracted those worldwide visitors to your blog. Remember Darren Rowse at problogger.net ? Nearly 10 high quality guest posts are published at problogger.net every single week. In spite of this huge incoming flux of guest posts, Mr. ProBlogger still continues to publish his own content there. Why? Because he knows that it is his unique writing and voice only that drives millions of worldwide visitors to problogger every single month! Occasionally accepting guest articles is perfectly fine, but totally depending on them and not adding any voice of your own might leave your blog in the dark.

2. Consistent threat of plagiarism in the published posts

You receive a grand guest submission and you immediately decide to publish it on your blog (obviously after checking for uniqueness and any possible plagiarism). But your job definitely does not end there. By publishing every single guest post on your blog, you are adding an extra workload for yourself. And that workload is to regularly check that the published guest articles are not republished anywhere on the web by your dear guest bloggers.

This happened with me a while back when a guest blogger after getting his article published on my blog, reproduced the whole content on several other websites without even bothering to notify me. I immediately took his article off my website and when I dropped him an email about the same, he simply replied: "actually I do not care."

What is your experience with the guest bloggers at your website ? Do share it with us in your comments below.

Hi Raj, I agree with your points. It's too bad you had a negative experience with a guest blogger - this kind of behaviour separates the good ones from what I call the "digital scum"

I can only agree with this. One of my customers has just asked whether they should accept guest posts. I said no. Unless you have a benefit from it. If not, it is only good for people getting links from your site. Great article. Thanks for sharing.

Having posted several guest blog posts now, I just scratch my head at why anyone would consider posting the same guest blog post elsewhere. A guest blog post is not just for engaging a new audience and generating traffic back to your site; it's also for nurturing a relationship with the blog owner. And what kind of relationship can you nurture when you're causing him/her trouble with duplicate content? Great post.

I've been planning to get more guest posts. Good thing, I chance upon this post. Now, I know I should be monitoring those who guest post on me.... pretty added workload ....

Certainly Nikkin. These days accepting guest posts on your blog can be very risky. Some pesky article marketers think of guest blogging just as a medium of building links and this spoils the spirit of guest blogging. I was infuriated over the reply i received by my so called guest blogger and ever since then i have been highly skeptical whenever someone asks me for a guest submission!!

Raj, a great reminder that we can never afford to be complacent when our reputation is at stake.

Can't believe the guy told you he doesn't care!

Thanks Raj  agree with you that the gust blog posting will put extra burden on us, it may cause to lack our own blog posting strengths, so be careful while accepting guest blog posting.
