3 Actions to Try Instead of Begging for Facebook “Likes”

Did you ever befriend the kid in school who kept following you around the playground saying “be my friend”? What about when he came round your house after school to do it? No, didn’t think so. So why are you entering your customers' or prospects' homes and doing the business equivalent?

Erm…no?

Never fear, the beauty of social media is that it’s not going away and it’s controlled by humans. Humans are forgiving. So you still have a chance to win them over. Here are three strategies you might want to try.

  • CARE. Yep, actually care about each individual you are reaching and/or hoping to reach through social media. If you care about them and solving their problems etc you will act as a human. You will provide them with the knowledge, information, attention or guidance to solve their problem and help them achieve their goals. If you continue to do this without asking (or begging) for anything in return they will love you! And yes, sure enough, when the say comes that they need your product/service you can bet you’ll be front and centre in their mind and buying decision.
  • LISTEN. So you’re in the business of needing sales to survive, right? So you wouldn’t want to waste your time with people that are never going to buy or promote your stuff? Cool, then stop asking anyone from any country to “like” your page and listen. Listen to local conversations, industry conversations, competitor conversations etc etc, and find the people that are relavent to your knowledge and business. These are the people whom you CARE about and can help, and these are the people you want to join your social media community…but to find them you have to stop begging and start listening…constantly.
  • CREATE and SERVE. Does your Facebook page already have a small following? Are these people your customers or targets? THEN SERVE THEM! Stop neglecting them in search of shinier figures. CREATE content and facilitate conversations that solve their problems, entertain them etc etc. No one goes to a social group that is empty or quiet, they join the thriving one that everyone is positively shouting about. In this case “build it and they will come” works… build a community and others will join…without the need to ask them to.

Don’t be that guy…er…business.

So there you have it. Stop begging for likes everyday and do something positive! What are you going to do tomorrow with that extra 30 minutes that you will have saved from not begging? Post it in the comments below; it might be something we can all try.

Yeah that's a fundamental rule of social media use. Imagine that it's a dinner party. You want to get to know the people around the table first, their likes, dislikes, problems etc etc. Then when you have a greater understanding of their situation, and they have more trust in you, you can join the conversation - but more importantly you can add value. This way they enjoy your company and are more likely to stay at the table longer...and take your number at the end of the night to continue the relationship beyond the dinner party. 

Engagement via social media really is as simple as that (despite many efforts to complicate it).

It appears to me that this post was writtent right for me, as I am know having some trouble building audience around my social channels. It seems to me that I am doing everything right, trying to be useful to my prospect, but it's hard enough to catch the right audience. Now that I have read your advices, it's a must for me to finally get my first 30 likes:) Thank you for your post

Thanks for reading first of all! 

It is extremely hard to build an audience, and even harder to build an active community. But, it is a journey, not a campaign, and journey's are far more exhilerating and laden with benefits/fun/excitement than short campaigns. 

The beauty and awesomeness of social media is that it's a journey. Embrace this fact and you will create a new mindset that will allow you to see the road ahead, and what you need to do, more clearly. The hardest part of any journey is the beginning, stepping into the unknown - don't rush it, find your way, meet awesome people, and be part of awesome experiences. The worst thing that can happen by treating social media as a journey is that you will learn - and that's what growth is all about.

We're all guilty of starting somewhere.  And for some people online, the ins and outs of social media are not obvious (those of more seasoned generations).

Though, "When in Rom...". 

It kills me to see people using these behaviors you describe above - The begging.  And the consistent feeding of information without engaging.  Yikes!  It's one thing to not know, but another to keep on after taking a lesson or two.  Eventually we tune this out, right?

My Facebook page has been described lately as a party.  People commented they were drawn in because it was fun.  I respond to each post, and I visit pages of admins that visit me.

It's a 2-way street.

I totally agree that we all start somewhere, and it is up to the professionals in the industry to move this starting point to a better place. Like you mentioned, lessons should tune this out...but only if the lesson leader tunes it out. Unfortunately I know a few that actually advocate constant asking (begging) for likes and follows etc.

I love how your page is being described as a party. The word social is 99% of the time associated with the word fun, something which the vast majority of businesses struggle to wrap their head around - probably because they are only focusing on the word "media".

I fully agree with the idea of sharing and engaging the community that you have to retain traffic, but how do you get more traffic/views to that community to begin with? It's great when people stop by your page (or house) and come in and see that it's a party and have a great time, but how do you invite them to the party without asking to begin with??

very good tips, I totally agree,  and another anonnyng behavior that simils begging is twitter following just hopping they will follow you back, I mean, come on, will you really read their tweets? I may sound rude but I don´t follow any body that I´m not interested in, its that bad?

on the advice part, I would suggest, writting directly in your friends walls, sharing an ebook you are promoting,that way their friends are able to see it and like it also.

This is really great because unfortunately there are many people entering into the social media world who don't know what true engagement means.  When I first started out I was a begger, then I realized while my fan count was going up, but my engagement wasn't.  It wasn't until I started connecting with intent that I began seeing comments and more engagement on my posts.  Now I connect with pages that I can communicate with on a regular basis and we have great conversations on multiple social media platforms!

A short but to the point article Kevin . Content, Care and listening. These 3 points are important not only in social media but also in daily life of an individual. Keeping your eyes and ears open , Talking only related content and acting with care. 

Serving customers, listening to them and then putting proper dish (content) is the right thing to do for any business unit who want to attract more people. Quality given is quantity taken.
