Stand out from the crowd is very difficult today, but this article has some great tips.Especially about adding a video on LInkedIn on introducing yourself, didn't think of that myself. I agree that LinkedIn is the most powerful tool to find a job (unlike Facebook). Making an outstanding profile gives you better chances because if you turn to the groups, you'll see a whole bunch of spammers, inviting you to apply for a job online. It's a shame nothing is done against that yet.
Thanks again for the article!

Great advice! Thanks for this post. Very timely for me too as I'm giving a presentation next week about using social media in your job search and I'm likely to beef up some of my stuff with some of your points. What continues to amaze me is that most of what you've said here has been said before and everything you've said is really common sense. That being said, not a day goes by without me reading something about some idiot getting fired for a Facebook post or a stupid Tweet. Is it that we just have no self control? Do we really believe that because there are over a billion people on Facebook our little status update will never be seen by our employer? I'm willing to bet that one of the people who reads this post, some time down the road, gets in trouble for something they do on a social network. The real question here is "Why?"
Thanks again for some great advice!

The biggest opportunity that social media presents for job seekers is the chance to engage and interact with typically inaccessible individuals who might be in a position to help. However, it is the type of engagement that will determine the outcome. In my opinion, commenting represents one of the strongest social signals and by engaging and commenting on blogs with active communities you accomplish three things; 1) build relationships and 2) educate yourself and 3) showcase your thoughts. The tool that I would recommend to help you along the way is Engagio (www.engag.io) which is great for tracking conversations across the social web (FYI. I work for engagio)
