If you are new at Social Networking, find people that know you in the "3D" world to sign up for the site and write something good about you. You don't have to win a prize for the largest number of testimonials, they just need to be positive to be effective. As time goes on, you will get more if you remember to ask.
I am an Open Networker, but I am not going to write a recommendation or testimonial for someone that I don't know. It is ok to know someone online, and have a feeling of a relationship to write that down. Don't ever fib or exaggerate.
When you put your name on a testimonial or recommendation, you are lending your reputation to that person. Be honest, say what you know. If that person is arrested for fraud, do you want a glowing recommendation about their work to be on the record? That does cast a shadow on your judgement.
I do write something even after a short number of interactions, but not if I have no experience at all with a person.
Be prudent, be generous, be honest, and work in alignment with your ethics and follow your gut!
