It would be nice to think that these blogger relations tips from Cory Doctorow (who you may know better as BoingBoing)weren't really necessary.
But for many people, even seasoned professional communicators, they are at best a welcome refresher and at worst, Blogger Relations 101.
Here's the extremely digested version, but I'm hoping you check out the whole essay:
- Have a link.
- Have a permanent link.
- Have a link for everything.
- Use real links.
- Use links that go to pages.
- Flash sites stink.
- PDFs stink. It's not a Web page (see "Have a link"). It's hard to copy and paste out of. It doesn't show up in browsers half the time. The Web is made of HTML.
- Streams stink.
- Put your URL on your images.
- Linking policies are ridiculous.
- Don't worry about "bandwidth stealing."
- Offer high-res images.
- Forget the "copyright protection" Javascript.
- Enough with the legal boilerplate.
- Creative Commons licensing takes the guesswork out of blogging.
- Finally: Send suggestions by the preferred means.
Ciao,
Bob.
PS: Anyone else find the first sentence of Doctorow's Wikipedia bio odd? "Cory Doctorow (born July 17, 1971) is a Jewish[1]Canadian blogger, journalist and science fiction author who serves as co-editor of the blog Boing Boing."
The second most important thing about Cory Doctorow (after his birthdate) is his religion? Seems weird to me, but maybe I'm the weird one.
