Facebook’s Crazy Targeting Options

ImageHave you ever noticed if you visit a website, such as Nordstrom, you will start seeing advertisements for this company on Facebook and other sites all over the web. This is called re-marketing. A pixel is placed on a companies website and once you hit this specific webpage, it’ll start serving advertisements to you through various networks.

Facebook recently announced that it is giving advertisers more targeting options. According to Search Engine Watch, advertisers on Facebook can target specific people based on changing life events. For instance, an advertiser can target someone who is either newly engaged or newlywed within the past six months.

To put this in simple terms, if you change your relationship status to “engaged” you will start seeing a heavy amount of advertisements for engagement rings or floral arrangements. You can just imagine how excited the marketing department at Jared, the Galleria of Jewerly is!

Many find this type of ad targeting to be obtrusive. On the contrary, the advertiser will tell you that it is serving the exact advertisements for which the user is looking.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with this form of advertising, the advancements on targeting continue to improve. Just beware the next time you inform all of your Facebook fans on the exciting news that you’ll be getting married.
