It's easy to look at social media as the responsibility of your marketing or public relations department. But there is another department that has an equally valid reason for tapping into the social channels. It's your Human Resources department.
/HR is responsible for your staffing and dealing with employee issues. Your social media sites give them the perfect place to find talent and spread the word about open positions and why you should be considered an employer of choice. The ability to share jobs online lets the company save money on the cost per hire.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) released a survey stating 68% of their respondents say the companies they work with are using social media for external communications and for marketing or recruiting purposes.
Another reason HR needs to be involved is an important part of social media strategy is deciding how to you handle your employees who are using it either on your social sites or talking on their own personal pages. You need to determine if you are going to give them access to social sites on your company internet.
All companies should have a social media policy in place to tell employees what is appropriate to say and what could potentially cost them their jobs. This requires an HR professional to let you know what should be the company's official position and response to potential questions.
A well thought out social media strategy offers benefits to all your departments to help grow your business.
