I hadn't seen that AT&T example before. When I see these bad taste newsjacking examples I often wonder if they were deliberate. A way to create buzz about a brand? It might be in good taste but it gets them talked about.
Not a tactic I'd recommend but you'd think the marketing departments in big business were smart enough to know what they were doing.
