Protect Yourself from Facebook Scams with Facecrooks: The Social Media Privacy Report
Posted on February 29th 2012
We have never been shy when it comes to reporting on Facebook and the network’s myriad privacy risks for users, and we do offer comprehensive tips on how users can manage the site’s settings for maximum security. However, Facebook’s social ecosystem presents more dangers to its users than just these.
Did you know that scams are prevalent on Facebook?
We reported on a few select scams floating around Facebook early last year: these included tax season frauds and a Japan earthquake relief scheme. Unfortunately, these are only two of countless scams that filter through the social network on a daily basis. If you are concerned about these schemes, visit our partner site Facecrooks.com.
A Facecrook is “one who commits fraudulent, illegal or evil acts on Facebook.” The site’s mission is to “monitor and chronicle the seedy, unsavory and silly side of social media.” They provide up to date news, resources and alerts on social media privacy and scams. Facecrooks’ blog publishes daily to inform its users on these issues.
Of particular interest, is the site’s “Scam Watch” section. Check here on a regular basis to discover if that offer for a Free iPad, all expenses paid vacation or $1,000 American Express card is for real or not. Facecrooks also offers insightful guides; popular posts include: “How to protect your Facebook account from Rogue Applications” and “Four Things you need to do if your Facebook account gets hacked.”
