Safer Internet Day: Teach Children to "Connect with Respect"
Posted on February 4th 2013
Safer Internet Day (SID) is celebrated in nearly 100 countries around the world in February of each year. In Europe, an amazing total of 30 countries mark the day with support from the European Commission's Safer Internet Programme.
Safer Internet Day 2013 – the tenth edition of the event – will take place tomorrow on Tuesday 5th February 2013, with the theme of Online Rights and Responsibilities, encouraging users to "Connect with Respect." It's a simple message, but will hopefully resonate with its young target audience.
SID is organised at a European level by Insafe, a European Network of Awareness Centres. If you're not in the UK, click through via their website to find out what is happening in your area.
SID is coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre (@UK_SIC) to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people. For the latest information about Safer Internet Day 2013 in the UK go to the UK Safer Internet Centre website. There are many opportunities to get involved with SID2013, and you can follow the days events on the hashtag #SID2013. There's an incredible amount of information there for parents, teachers and young people: please promote it in your personal networks.
Here's a way to see how much you really know about internet safety - challenge yourself with the Internet Safety IQ test. Why not ask the kids to do it too and see who is most aware?
The UK Safer Internet Centre is a partnership of three leading charitable organisations, Childnet International, the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). These organisations are committed to working to make a safer and better internet). All partners recognise the unparalleled opportunities the internet offers and actively encourage its positive use for social, leisure, economic and educational advancement. The partners all work towards the Childnet target; to make the Internet a great and safe place for children. The UK Safer Internet Centre is online at www.saferinternet.org.uk.
