We live in an attention economy. Content is important but without being able to capture that all important, fleeting attention span of our audience then the best content in the world is useless.
That means that design and gamification ploys play a pivotal role in helping your content stand out, creating engagement and becoming part of the online identity of your brand. Throughout the Social Media Power Talk videos we've talked to market leaders, and leading practitioners, gathering their ideas, thoughts and insights for the Social Media Today audience.
Helping us in this task were leading designer Dustin W. Stout and Harvard University graduate Dr. Christopher Vogelmann. In the days before the semantic web social media was just another broadcast channel. What happened within each channel stayed there. The web now is transparent. Activities that happen in one place have an impact elsewhere. The issues of trust, authority and expertise cut across every marketing quadrant.
Design and gamification, in this new setting, are part of an overall approach that now requires authenticity and a strong core of values to launch any kind of marketing from. Psychology, games, design, all of these can significantly help boost your engagement. But you must know who you are, what you do, what you want to do.
These are deep, introverted questions that in the past no business really had to answer. That they now form part of the core of any business strategy is only a mark of how far we have come.
The 21st century is still young. We are learning all the time. Some of the lessons we have learnt are drawn directly from our interactions with experts, much like this series has proved.
