Social Shares Have A ‘Half-Life’ Of 3 Hours

I’m on a Twitter kick this week. If you’ll forgive me, I’ll throw in another post about Twitter – although this one is about Twitter and Facebook shares.

Just to recap, check out these earlier posts about Twitter:

Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land posted yesterday about the half-life of a tweet and a Facebook share. Essentially, that half-life is 3 hours (it’s twice that long on YouTube).

So what is a “half-life,” you ask? According to Bit.ly, a half-life is the period of time it takes for your tweet or Facebook share to receive half the clicks it will ever receive. Then, from there, it’s all downhill.

Danny Sullivan recommends, and I agree, that you submit “second chance” tweets and Facebook shares after that half-life has expired. In other words, you should submit your links again, to both Twitter and Facebook (and probably LinkedIn too) in 4 or 5 hours. Give all of your followers and fans a chance to see your links.

Successful social media sharers often re-share their important links. But I would say don’t just re-share them on the same day. You can also wait a few days and re-share them at a different time of the day. Keep your important links alive.
