Let's be honest: no matter how important this year's Euro Cup is to us, it is hard to sneak away from the office to watch a game on a Monday afternoon at 2:30 pm. It's just not an ideal time slot if you live in the states.
Luckily, there are ways to stay in the loop, in real time. Writers, bloggers, broadcasters, players, coaches, fans and teams write to keep you informed play-by-play. I tend to follow the Wall Street Journal blog. It's extremely timely for up to the minute updates.
However, there is one part that of the games that is pretty hard to catch up on. All the great tweets.
Every year, social media gets more and more intertwined with live events and broadcasts. A few decades ago, it was pretty hard to keep up with the games outside of television. Nowadays though, the story is very different. Live streaming, social media campaigns, and all around exceptional athleticism have contributed to the rise of soccer engagement here in the USA. People are tweeting left and right about every game for this year's Euro Cup. So, cheers! Here are some of the best tweets about Euro Cup 2012 that you probably missed.
During England's quarter final match against Italy, a British police force tweeted "Great tackle by Terry, we'll be tackling repeat offenders." The tweet was made in remark of John Terry, an English defender. During the game he blocked a shot from Italian Mario Balotelli. However, this snarky comment embedded reference to the fact that John Terry is actually due in court on July 9 due to the accusation that he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a previous match. The people tweeting for the police force also inserted their own commentary about both England and Italy's strategies, some near goals and great saves too. In good spirit though, they also constantly reminded their fellow soccer followers to stay safe and sober and to keep a designated driver.
Here's to some truly dedicated fans and to some truly innovate technology. Live streaming of the EuroCup 2012 games on mobile devices -- perfect for watching during church services, according to this tweet!
Known for his good looks and his even stellar soccer skills, it is not often you hear someone diss Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo. But the brave soul on Twitter did, claiming Spanish midfielder and forward David Silva would steal the show.
It's true. Spain does take a long, long time before they make a big move. Pass after pass after pass. This tweeter has a point.
No, this isn't Cristiano's personal twitter. But, it IS his quote. This tweet is in reference to the game-decider penalty kicks between Portugal and Spain on June 28th. Spain came out victorious with a final score of 4-2 in penalty kicks. However, the famed Ronaldo did not have an opportunity to even kick.
I've noticed a trend on twitter of referring to dictators and previous wars during the Euro Cup. Rick Muscles seems to capture everyone's thoughts. His tweet has to do with the Italy-Germany match up. Love it or hate it -- he doesn't care. That's twitter.
Last but not least, a Tim Tebow joke. They never end.
