In what is likely news that will not surprise anyone, "happiness" and "love" were the top two topics discussed on Valentine's Day online, with 35.8% and 25.8% of the 311,760 online conversations.
Jokes aside, it is interesting to see that the most talked about topics on Valentine's Day weren't gifts or date ideas, but rather the most buzzed about topics were feelings. "Happiness" (31.8%) and "love" (25.8%) were the clear runaway winners in terms of topics discussed, leading to a very interesting gap in the percentages between the 2nd most talked about topic and the third, "being single" (6.3%).
While the most popular topics yielded fun data, there were a lot of other conversations going on around Valentine's Day, including:
- Which dating apps were most popular (Tinder) and which were least popular (Hinge)
- Which dating sites were most popular (Match.com) and which were least popular (PlentyOfFish.com)
- The feelings associated with Valentine's Day
- What were the most popular presents (Chocolate)
- How many people were discussing 50 Shades of Grey (5,364)
The data around where people are posting from is particularly interesting: of the people that opted in to allowing their location to be posted, Los Angeles, Houston and New York are the most 'romantic' cities in the US.
It is also great and reassuring to see that the 'classic' Valentine's Day gifts still seemed to be the most popular presents to give your significant other: chocolate (5.5%) was the most buzzed about gift, followed by flowers (3.1%), candy (2.8%), jewelry (2.3%) and then lingerie (0.4%).
