Our favourite Twitter tools

If you’re already using Twitter (and if not, why not?) you may not have come to terms, or even begun to understand, the raft of tools and applications available. Well I felt the same, so I’ve been doing a bit of digging and here are a few I really like. Now, this list isn’t definitive. There are loads more out there, but these work well. If you have any others you’d like to suggest, please feel free to comment.

1. Tweetdeck is great for managing your tweets, groups and searches. It has a much better interaction design than your web based Twitter account. The latest version is cleverly integrated with Facebook and allows you to turn your tweets into ‘what’s on your mind’ on Facebook and vice versa. Handy.

2. For the iphone Twitterfon works well, however if you’re using Tweetdeck you can now transfer all the columns you set up on Tweetdeck onto your iPhone which is much more useful. There are clear instructions for setting this up on Mashable.

3. For searching there are a few tools for searching relevant keywords on Twitter and we’ll mention a few here. Of course if you have Tweetdeck you can search straight through that and keep the column saved on your deck. Others are ... read more >>

How to Use Twitter for Business

I sat in last week on an excellent webcast presented by Chris Abraham of social PR firm Abraham Harrison and Anamitra Banerji, product manager at Twitter, on using Twitter for business. If you've got an hour, check out the slides and presentation video; if you only have a few minutes, here are the highlights from the presentation.

What Twitter is Useful For

1) sharing real-time news, such as what was happening, while it was happening, during the terrorist attack on Mumbai;

2) monitoring what people are saying about your company, brand, industry, hobby, favorite charity, cause, or anything else; and

3) business.

The primary business use of Twitter is for listening to and carefully communicating with customers and prospects. However, there are multiple examples of companies finding other interesting uses for Twitter:

CRMJetBlue, Comcast Cares, Starbucks, Ford

BrandingiStock, Whole Foods

Product promotionDirecTV, DealUniversity

How to Prospect for an Audience

1) Mine your email accounts for people that you know / have interacted with, and search for them in Twitter.

2) Follow suggested people from Twitter (these are usually high-profile Tweeters).

3) Follow the people who the top influencers ... read more >>

Twitter Popularity Followers and more - Tweepular

Tweepular screenshot moonwalking bird

The moonwalking bird is enough to keep me hooked. Tweepular is more than dancing birds though. It’s one of the latest tools to manage your followers and those you’re following.

Bright pastel colors and graphics take this a step beyond some other tools. As well the speed appears to be significantly faster than most. Surprisingly it handled the large number of followers I have without any noticeable issue.

Key features I enjoyed:

  • Large variety of sorts - last post, followers, Tweepular’s ranking and more.  All sorts go ascending or descending.
  • Click and go - each individual twitterer can be clicked and the action done immediately.  The moonwalking bird pops up and when it’s done the screen is updated to remove that individual. No gross reload of the screen nor significant delay.
  • Shows last updated but also when follow happened - the date of last tweet is useful, but for me knowing when they followed me was useful as well.  Interesting to find several that had followed on April 13 for example and hadn’t tweeted since.
  • Oh yeah, the moonwalking bird.

It may not be the end all of Twitter follower management but for tonight it did a bang up job.

Mailana - new Twitter Analysis tool

Using Mailana, a new Twitter Analysis tool I tried viewing my conversations; heard about Mailana from Beth Kanter’s blog .

I also picket out “Search Engine Strategies” to find influentials who are on twitter than are blogging with each other about SES“, see below”

Nice, but I’n not seeing anything all that unusual or surprising.   Beth Kanter bought up there’s a lot more you can do Mailana:

“….I can also click on a map of someone in my network, KDPaine, for example, and see who her inner circle is. I can also search by keyword and she who she talks to about that. For example, I searched KD Paine’s map on the word “metrics” Presumbly, because these people are talking to KD Paine (and she is responding) and the tweets contain the word “metrics” - these might be people I’d want to connect with because I’m interested in this topic.

1. jasonfalls
2. kanter
3. serena
4. silkcharm
5. curtmonash
6. thornley
7. mcp85
8. dough
9. andrewcherwenka

I could not get the local search to work for me - if I had, I’d be able to do a search of those who are e changing information about SES around my area, as the information should be easy to bring into facebook
