The Agency Side of Business: Lee Odden, Top Rank

Lee Odden 2009 Hiring an agency today can be a daunting task. There are so many out there - how do you know which one is a right fit for your needs?

This series was hatched when I wrote if I were an agency today. That's when I set out to discover notable agency blogs. Among the many practitioners I met in the last couple of years, a few stand out for their consistency, generosity, and good work.

I met Lee Odden when the PRSA conference was in Philadelphia a few years ago. We had a chance to get to know each other better when I was speaking at the MIMA 2008 Summit and, most recently, at SxSWi.

How did you come to the decision to start your own company?

Lee: In late 1996 I transitioned careers and started working for a web development company in Minneapolis where I had the opportunity to grow the custom web development and search engine optimization practice to a substantial share of overall revenue. In 2001 I decided to move on and became a partner in a Marketing/PR firm – Misukanis & Odden.

Because I marketed, sold and often times made and supported the web development and marketing services we offered, I realized that I could be doing thos... read more >>

Mac vs. PC Online

Microsoft and Crispin have launched its latest competitive ads against Apple and TBWA. This time, the focus is price, not a bad strategy in a down economy.

They’ve seemed to give up on the “PC users are cool, too” strategy after Apple and co. reacted very quickly with a jab at the campaign itself.I like the TV ad. I think it was a good execution of a “normal” person shopping.

Online, though, I have to wonder if Microsoft and Crispin are simply out of their league. This promotion showed up on the home page of the NewYorkTimes.com on Friday. It was a slot machine execution to show how much money you would save.
There wasn’t a lot to it; it was kind of small and hard to read; and it didn’t take advantage of the medium very well. You could spin to see what great extras you missed out on by buying a MacBook.Think about what they’re up against:

The latest Apple MacBook and iPod ads have the computer busting out of its assigned ad space. And the Apple vs. PC ads online have been the best, hands down, of repurposing TV ads online.

Click here for a great, great example of what Apple and TBWA do with a NYT.com ad.TBWA has used the technology in clever ways to gain attention, either by smashin...

As online advertising is failing: how to get leads now?

Failing Internet advertising

Eric Clemons - Professor of Operations and Information Management at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania - explains on TechCrunch a number of reasons why advertising is failing on the Internet:
- Consumers do not trust advertisingInternet advertising is failing
- Consumers do not want to view advertising
- Consumers do not need advertising

The same reasons should apply to businesses:
- Do businesses trust advertising?
- Do businesses want to view advertising on the Internet?
- Do businesses need online advertising?

Do you click on online advertising?
Probably not as you are reading this blog.

The Economist published similar remarks about the online advertising that was supporting the web 2.0 growth and predict the end of the free lunch (free online content)

Advertising and media

Traditional media was a one way communication: radio, movies and television.
This allowed:
- Pushing messages and content in one way.
- Preformatted sequential access to content.

The Internet has become a two way media:
Although the Internet website originally started out as just a display of content, changes have taken place over the years:
- Content with interaction from...

6 Practical Tips for Ad Agency RFP Responses

20071219rfp_2

Heather Witalisz, Business Development Director, Adams & Knight agency, Avon, CT recently asked, What are some practical tips for small-to midsize ad agencies regarding RFPs?

RFP responses shouldn’t be a numbers game, especially for small-to midsize ad agencies.

Every agency needs a “simple” system to qualify which of the RFPs they should respond to. Start by asking the right questions:

  • Is the opportunity a right fit for the agency?
  • If we were to get the business can we profitably service the account?
  • What is the budget? Why are they issuing an RFP?
  • Is the incumbent agency participating?
  • Is the client in good financial standing?

You’ll need to develop your own list of qualifying questions and get answers that allows you to evaluate each opportunity.

For those RFP opportunities that your agency decides to provide a response, here are some tips that I hope will be of help:

  1. Simplify the Process. Agencies tend to want to” recreate the wheel” with every RFP response. This is totally unnecessary and a great waste of agency time. Develop a concept for the response covers, layout, boxes, cases, etc. that can be used for any response or a concept for certain categories. Keep the respo...

A Guide for Ad Agencies: The Cost and Servicing of New Media

expanding-digital-opportunities1

The two big questions that ad agencies are asking: “How do we price new media and what type of services should we offer?”

A great resource to help find answers to those two questions is found in a recent released publication released by the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) “Understanding the Economics of Digital Compared to Traditional Advertising and Media Services,” written by Joe Burton, COO of McCann Worldwide agency.

Mr. Burton explains,

“Our industry is facing the its most significant change since the invention of TV - the migration to Digital.Digital is unlike any other medium and should not be viewed using traditional benchmarks. The high-volume, low-dollar, high-complexity nature of Digital programs makes it the most labor intensive medium in the advertising industry

…  these issues require resources and drive a cost of providing basic Digital services that is directionally double that of traditional full service agency fees, when expressed per dollar of the media spend.”

Joe explores the key drivers that contribute to the higher costs of Digital advertising and media agency services when compared to traditional marketing services and he stipulates that...
