5 Absolutely ESSENTIAL Wordpress Plugins

There are thousands of Wordpress Plugins available which do all sorts of Wordpress-logoawesome things. Here are the five plugins which I use on every Wordpress site I set-up or administer:

All in One SEO Pack

This is one of the most popular Wordpress Plugins and for good reason. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is essential in improving the chance of Google, Bing, Yahoo etc. sending visitors to any Website. With just a few mouse clicks the All in One SEO Pack automates SEO activities such as creating page titles, creating and filling the ‘description’ meta tag on each post and much more.

Contact Form 7

Contact Form 7 is just so simple to use and it works beautifully. Adding fields or questions to a form is easy and can be done in no time at all. This Plugin doesn’t have some of the more advanced features of some other Wordpress form Plugins however what it does provide will suit 99% of requirements.

WordPress SQL Executioner

This is a basic no nonsense and incredibly powerful Plugin which is essential for anyone frequently running SQL queries. This Plugin allows for the running of a SQL query from within Wordpress itself which can save significant time ... read more >>

My Current Top 5 Favorite WordPress Plugins

There are many, many WordPress plugins out there (WordPress has instructions on how to install plugins). Here are my top recommendations for the blogging lawyer/law student:

1. BackType Connect / IntenseDebate - BackType incorporates Twitter mentions into your comment stream.

It unfortunately is not yet compatible with another favorite plugin of mine called IntenseDebate, which adds comment threading and other useful tools to the default comment functionality in WordPress. It can also synchronize with the basic WordPress system, so it is easy to turn on and off.

2. DB Cache + Hyper Cache - DB Cache speeds up database access by caching common queries. Hyper Cache makes static versions of Web pages (like WP Super Cache, but I’ve found it more focused and streamlined in its approach). The combination excels at reducing server resource consumption and serving the maximum number of visitors with the minimum resource use.

3. Tweetable - Automatically sends your new postings to Twitter, with the nice bonus of adding your blog name to each post. So, for example, my postings say “via in propria persona.” It also ... read more >>

Setting Up Your Wordpress Ping List

@AndysGoodeLife asked on Twitter this morning:

“You had in your *Blackbook* a URL for setting up ping services… any chance you have that on the top of your head?”

I realized that it would be a good post because I couldn’t remember off the top of my head what I’d linked to in the Authority Black Book.  It made me turn to Google to see what was up in the Wordpress ping list world, and suffice it to say, we need an update!

All the posts on Wordpress ping lists are pretty dated and the instructions for using them are super geeky.

What’s a “Ping List?”

Wordpress comes with a small, default list of sites to “ping” when you make a post.  It’s kind of like tapping someone on the shoulder and saying “Hey, I have something new for you to check out.”  Google and others camp out on such sites to find new content.  Plus you can ping Google directly whenever you post by including them in your ping list as well.

To find out what/who you are pinging now, just go into your admin area and, under “Settings” find “Writing Settings.”  At the bottom of that page you will see “Update Services” and a short list of default places you are pinging when you post to your blog.

LinkedIn Apps : Blogging and Twitter

I like the following two LinkedIn Apps the most for sheer usefulness.  Try them out – the blog gets extra readers and Company Buzz helps you track company. See them right below the all new LinkedIn inbox.

image

The link below takes you to the Application Directory.

http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=application_directory

My Wordpress blog helps me when I want to post an article to one of the 50 groups. I use the Add to Any button from  and click share on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is quite convenient for sharing ( but be careful of overdoing it –lest it goes spam)

I use the Company Buzz with a slight twist though. By using broad keywords I get a list of, say, people I want to follow in the world of data mining or business intelligence.

Next I follow NOT the people following the influential tweeters, but the people who they are using RT or messaging replies @.

Hope this helps your LinkedIn account. You can send me a LinkedIn Invite at www.linkedin.com/in/ajayohri .

And do take part in the Social Media School group on LinkedIn here http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1854626

A Website in less than an Hour

I just created a new website (www.swanplc.com ).It took me around 45 minutes from the time I put in my credit card information for getting new server space to getting the final look of a website.

If you are a SME / Academic who has always wanted to create a Web 2.0 website but were skeptical  about the whole thing a jig, read on.

1) Choosing a hosting provider (www.bluehost.com  I chose Bluehost because for a 24 month plan I get the domain name registration also free . This works out to 6.95 dollars a month.

2) Choosing a domain name (This was simple and part of the sign in process above. Since my organization is Swarajya Analytics Private Limited , I chose the namewww.swanplc.com as other alternatives were too long or not available.

Note I tried to choose a domain name that

  • is easy to remember
    • (not too long ,
    • not too short,
    • doesn’t have similar sounding websites),
  • is very related to my original task/name,
  • and is available)

3) Choosing a web software –The website I am making is just a place for people to come, read and then contact me. The number of webpages would be limited to less than 5, so I choose Wordpress. If I had to choose a large website with many web pages , I would probably choos... read more >>

WordPress SEO and Plug-ins

One of the major reasons to use WordPress is SEO, and lots of other people have added to my knowledge base over the years. Remarkablogger put out some really awesome  tutorials a while back and I learned a lot from him as well as many others.

Rather than keep all that SEO goodness to myself I thought I share it with you. Take what’s useful and add your own favorite WordPress SEO tips and tricks in the comments! Keep in mind that you may or may not want to use all of these. I’m running most of them and don’t have any conflicts, but plug-ins have been known to conflict with each other or the themes you’re using, so...

How to upgrade your Wordpress blog automatically!

There’s a new Wordpress plugin that will automatically upgrade your Wordpress blog to the latest version. This plugin, Wordpress Automatic Upgrade, by Keith D Souza and Ronalfy, completely automates your Wordpress blog updates. No more downloading the latest Wordpress version, unzipping the zip file, and uploading the files via FTP.

This plugin tells you there’s a new version of Wordpress and walks you step by step through the upgrade process. The wizard backs up your current system files and downloads them to your computer, backs up your MySQL database and downloads the backup to your computer then downloads the new version of Wordpress, unzips it and installs it. The only thing you have to do is click on the links that appear as each step completes. What a great plugin!

Don’t believe me? Watch this video to see how easy it is to upgrade your own Wordpress blog.

How to Find a Killer WordPress Design(er)

WordPress is great blog software and, quite frankly, the tool I would recommend to run your entire site, home page and all. This site wide use of WordPress has become so prevalent that I don’t really even refer to it as blog software, it’s web presence, content management software with SEO built in.

This post however, is not about WordPress as much as it is about the getting a design of your site using WordPress. This all started because I get asked where to find a good WordPress web designer about three times a day. (In some cases the simple answer is that if they are good, they are hiding because they have too much work.)

I went on twitter and using the advanced search functions I tracked conversations regarding WordPress design in hopes of turning up the names of folks specializing in this tool so I could create a bit of a resource. While I did turn up a tidy little list (see below) I also uncovered the fact that people tweeting requests for WordPress design help outnumbered people suggesting they could provide that help about twenty to one. I think we have a supply issue here!

So today I want to do my part to free up some of the backlog of WordPress design frustration, point out ... read more >>
