Being a bit of an old codger, it's easy to decry and bemoan the rise of the selfie, to complain that it's a horribly shallow trend that portends the end of civilization. But one needs to take a step back. Rather than complain, smart businesses will accept and embrace the new selfie phenomenon.
If selfies were zombies then by golly, we have been overtaken. Personal close-ups are just the latest viral outbreak in the social media realm. While taking a photo of oneself is not a new concept, the term "selfie" (and the increasing narcisism that goes along with it) is a newfangled creation.
Love them or hate them, the selfie is a fact of cyber-life in 2014. But what does the selfie, usually attributed to self-obsessed Gen Ys, have to do with us content marketers? Plenty. Any business can play along and cash in on the craze. Here are a few steps to get your own selfie campaign started.
Almost everybody is guilty of posting a selfie at some point in their life. One selfie – no biggie, I can put up with that. Two selfies – not my forte, but everybody needs a new profile picture now and then. A selfie every damn time you get ready to go out – that’s where I draw the line!
