I agree with you, jerdog! One of the first things I did when I joined Google Plus a year ago was to search for people who discuss topics I am interested in, such as science, technology, web development, and politics. It was like going on a treasure hunt.
As I added interesting people to my circles and participated in their conversations, I took note of who else commented on their posts, and added those people to my circles also. It was not long before I had a stream full of fascinating posts and discussions to read and participate in.
In answer to Kim Siever, sure, all you'll see is memes if the people whom you personally choose to circle post those.
Randolph, are you sure you're a social media expert? Your article leads me to think that your mind is made up about Google Plus, so no one need bother you with facts.
Facebook serves a valuable niche, as does Twitter. Google Plus is my personal preference, because it suits my personality and the needs of my business.
What one gets from Google Plus depends on how they manage their circles. I enjoy the exchange of news and ideas, and my circles reflect that. The people whom I circle are smart, funny, well-informed and socially conscious. They are from a variety of political and religious philosophies, and many different countries and cultures from around the world. The quality and depth of the conversations I read and participate in on Google Plus are vastly superior to those I find on Facebook.
At this point, I think where Twitter has an enormous advantage is its API, which I find easier to use than Facebook's. Google Plus's API is read-only and under developed, so far. (I give Google Plus credit for offering public Hangouts with some of its developers each week.)
BTW Randolph, I saw only 5 public posts on your Google Plus profile, the most recent of which was dated April. When I checked, I saw that you had circled only 73 people, which is an inadequate test of what Google Plus has to offer. You sir, have not experienced Google Plus enough for your opinion of it to have any value.
