Since 2010, I believe I have heard it all when talking about online marketing. Some businesses try to lead the market by being the loudest in the room while others drive home casual indulgence. You may already know I am always leaning on the latter…with flip flops on.

A crucial part of social media is within a company and its employees. An employee can carry or hinder an organization’s message. Many companies are restricting all access to social networking sites such as, Facebook, to eliminate any temptation to socialize online during work hours. However, employees are finding ways to do so on their smart phones anyway. With an open door social media policy in place, employees can contribute to an organization by generating content and exposing their internal culture.

Whether you like it or not, our local community in Columbus Georgia is leaning on Social Media more and more every day. In just the past few weeks we have seen it used to alert the area of bad weather, a weary manhunt and many other community based forums for interaction. While the Ledger Enquirer focused on the media users at a desktop using the live chat forum ( not mobile friendly), the rest of the population utilized Facebook and Twitter on mobile devices to find most of our updates on this ‘manhunt’.

Yes, Groupon has been valuated at 6 billion dollars thanks to Google. But what exactly were they buying? What does Groupon do so well that Google can not replicate it or go vertical with it? That’s the real question. It may be that Groupon now owns the social couponing market and that’s why they are so tasty.
