Yes, review management is very important for businesses. I'm constantly suprised at the number of businesses who have no idea what is being said about them online, and shocked at those who don't seem to think their reputation impacts customer acquisition!
Yes (shameless plug aside!) it's important to research any agencies or consultants you might choose to work with to make sure you find a partner who can help you represent your brand in the right voice and through the right medium.

Social Media can be very time consuming, and not always time well spent.
It's important to find the right balance between time, money, effort and the return you get from it. As with anything in life there is no shame in getting help if it is the boost you need to set your campaign back on the road to success.

You're right, it's the responsibility of each business to use Social Media in a way that's most effective for themselves. Your own story is testament to that!
Social Media can put us in front of clients half a world away, as in your case, or it can introduce us to like minded people just around the corner.
What's important is finding the right medium to express yourself and not to waste effort where you won't get results.
