I think there are a couple other key ingredients... a thirst for knowledge and some life experience. And life experience doesn't have to be associated with age. Some folks have had to grow up faster than others. Some folks have been working longer than others. But it's that life experience of working and interacting with people, either through volunteer or paid work, that really make a difference. I LOVE working with people who have a background in the restaurant industry as a waiter, bartender, etc. They (usually) have some killer customer service instincts and insights and know what it's like to work long hours to get things done.
Also, love of learning and giving new tools a chance is SUPER important. I'm over 25 but still end up being one of the youngest people in attendance at some conferences. I hear OVER AND OVER again, "Well, these kids grew up with this stuff, it's easy for them." That defeatist attitude is what gets in the way of "older folks". It goes the same with younger folks too, thinking that they need to totally live within a job description. I don't think I've ever applied for a job that I was completely qualified for.
