Social media is ubiquitous.
You cannot walk down a street or a hallway without near bumping into someone with their head down and eyes buried into a mobile social network of choice.
Ditto for the classroom.
If not for course policies and constant reminders to "Step away from the smart phone before it makes you look dumb," classrooms would be inhabited with digital zombies.
And So It Goes With Personal Branding and Job Search.
While the use of social media for personal branding and job search (PB&J) is still in its infancy, the best of the online millennials have perhaps strayed a bit far to the right side of the self-marketing continuum between physical networking and virtual/social networking.
The following story is an illustration.
The Take-Away: from URL to IRL.
A social media enthusiastic URL based digital life and personal brand does not always translate well to others in real life (#IRL: bosses, coworkers, customers/clients, potential employers, friends/family, professors, and strangers).
Social share buttons, WordPress plugins, iPhone apps, Klout scores, and number of Twitter followers may be of little help during a job interview or a physical networking opportunity (unless the job is in social media).
We all need to find more time to log-off, get-out, tune-in to the real world, and practice more social networking in real life.
Are any of your social media habits or behaviors potentially excessive or annoying to others?
