We all know that Emmy winner Homeland took the cake at this year's awards with a total of six Emmys, but if you were to look on social media you would probably be asking why. Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire (just three of the contenders) have more than quadruple the amount of Facebook fans and Twitter followers.
The public has spoken (and is speaking right now) about Emmy winner Homeland and we're discontent. How could this show defeat these other programs with such small numbers? Did something happen within the last few months to favor Homeland?
It's been on for a few seasons, but not nearly as long as its competition. This is the principle reason people keep telling me to allow Homeland a chance here. The Emmy winner got off on the right foot and started out so strong that the show has been dominating the space.
If you were to poll the internet right now I think it would disagree. I think over 5 million Facebook fans disagree as well as numerous message boards dedicated to its contenders - not to Emmy Winner Homeland.
Is this article totally biased? Yes. Yes it is. I was looking for Bryan Cranston to steal the show as Walter White and outstanding drama to go towards Boardwalk Empire. I know the Emmys aren't publicly polled and that these decisions were made well in advance, but I can't help tie social media into this.
The social media for Homeland is a bit low, though expect a significant rise considering the six emmy wins. Here's a look at Breaking Bad and Mad Men.
Here's the sub-reddit for Homeland with 2.4K subscribers. Here's the sub-reddit for Boardwalk Empire. Double.
Homeland premiered on October 2nd, 2011 - so yes, it has just gotten off the ground as compared to these series.
But it makes you wonder - is the rate of social media increase complimenting these wins and helping justify them? Or are they what my cynical brain is thinking and something else?
