Facebook has released its latest 'Topics to Watch' report, which highlights key subjects seeing significant increases in mention volume.
Facebook's monthly Topics to Watch reports use the platform's data insights to highlight issues or subjects which, based on Facebook's assessment, are set to become more significant trends - and that can provide significant benefit for marketers.
Imagine being able to get ahead of the crowd on the kale trend a few years back, or tapping into the resurgence in 80's fashion before it became cool (did it become cool? I'm probably too old to judge).
Facebook says that up to 80% of the topics they've identified in their Topics to Watch reports have gone on to become more significant trends, so its definitely worth paying attention, and tapping into any specific subjects related to your niche.
So what was trending on Facebook last month?
First up, it's Boston Baked Beans, which
As noted by Facebook:
"Comfort food has its place in the American diet, and regional staples, like Boston baked beans and chicken and waffles, may now be finding popularity nationwide—for game days and barbecues alike."
Seems like fairly significant YoY mention growth.
Facebook has also determined that cantaloupe is trending.
While 'diomaceous earth' is also generating more discussion.
What?
Facebook explains:
"A fine powder made from fossilized diatoms, diatomaceous earth, or D.E. for short, is truly a multifunctional product. It's most commonly used in the home as a pest repellant. But this sedimentary rock is even safe enough to eat. Food-grade D.E. can supply calcium, iron, magnesium and sodium within people's diets, and it's said to help rid the body of toxins and parasites."
Hot dog buns, specifically have also been a point of contention.
Facebook says this is due to people seeking options to replace the traditional hot dog buns, "like mac and cheese and fried chicken. Others are exploring healthier and gluten-free alternatives, like buns made from zucchini or almond flour."
There are also some outdoor sports rising in the warmer months. The humble skateboard kick-flip is seeing more interest.
While wakeboarding is also trending.
Obviously, not all of these will be relevant, but if there are any that relate to your niche, it may be worth incorporating these subjects into your content approach - or at least, tuning in and seeing what the new emphasis is all about.
As noted, tapping into trending topics can be a great way to boost your messaging, and Facebook's Hot Topics insights can provide guidance on this. Worth taking note.
