Facebook has released its latest ‘Topics to Watch’ report, which highlights the key trends gaining momentum, based on mention volume, across The Social Network.

Wanna’ jump on board the next big thing, before it’s ‘a thing’? Here’s the Hot Topics Facebook identified in the first month of 2018.
First up, we can see that ‘Bodyweight Exercise’ has seen a significant rise in popularity.
That makes sense – it’s the start of the year, and New Year’s resolutions have people flocking into gyms, only to give on them a few months later. Still, starting is the hardest part, and the latest fitness trends may help provide some inspiration to those in the sector.
Chatbots are also gaining momentum in Facebook discussions – though interesting to note, the conversation is dominated by men.
Could that mean we see chatbots finally gain significant momentum in 2018? Facebook’s still betting big on the option in Messenger, and Twitter recently announced new tools to facilitate more automated chat options.
Etiquette in technology has also seen a much bigger focus of late – particularly among older female users of The Social Network.
There’s been a lot of discussion around how women are treated in the workplace, and the culture of tech in particular.
Meanwhile regenerative medicine is also a hot topic.
As are spiral vegetable slicers.
Again, the health focus of the New Year may have something to do with this – though these trends have been building for some time, as shown in each graph.
And the last key trend identified by Facebook this month is ‘Uplifting trance’.
Looking for music to play in-store? Maybe some Armin van Buuren will do the trick – particularly if you’re trying to appeal to 24-34 year olds.
As noted, Facebook’s data science team believes that these topics will develop into more significant trends, which could help you get ahead of the wave, depending on how applicable each is to your business.
Either way, the Topics to Watch report provides some interesting insight into what’s trending on Facebook, and can get you thinking about why that might be – and how that could be of benefit.
