1. You would be surprised with how many industries are out of touch with modern marketing techniques - so very true. I come across it every day. On one hand everybody is talking about most up-to-date marketing methods (social media, permission marketing, content marketing) and observing the current trends, on the other so many are still in the past times marketing mindset.
2. Thanks to social media, it is easy to see how your competitors handle customer service issues on platforms like Facebook and Twitter - it is worth doing. Company's Facebook and Twitter can render great insights - you can easily check out competitors' client service policy, handling customer talk, response time, problem solving.

Great post and it certainly outlines the main advanatges of keeping an eye on competition. I would suggest however not to spend too much time dwelling on what others are doing and instead developing your own product, strategy and customer relationships. http://www.intouchcrm.com/
