This post hits home. As a professional freelance writer, I've found guest blogging to be a singularly powerful platform. A single guest post I wrote for a client's blog drove more visitors to my site than anything I'd tried previously. (It didn't hurt that the founder of Scoop It! scooped me and offered a very kind review, which garnered 65+ tweets. My site traffic and Twitter follows spiked sharply as a result.)
For me, 2014 is the Year of the Guest Blog. Not only does guest blogging allow me to showcase my writing skills and expertise, but it also confers credibility, just as you suggest. Few other social media platforms can do both so easily.

Your piece is candid and straight to the point. The benefits of guest blogging cannot be ignored.
Traffic generations and increased conversions are some of the best benefits any guest blogger can take advantage of.
However, its still important to do this the right way. Gaming the process will not do the guest blogger any good and this is just what Matt Cutts was trying to emphasize!
