This list could go on and on. You need to leverage your web presence by being selective and using your precious resources wisely.
Different social media sites do different things. So first, figure out what you want social media to do for you. Who are your customers? Do you want to build a community? Are you looking to grow your customer base? Want to network with other business people?
Next you need to know how much time you have to devote to a site. You cannot just create a site and then ignore it. You'll need to monitor for comments, hacking and friend or follower activity. You need to create content that will keep people coming back and draw people in.
Be prepared to post daily messages and updates. If you have more than one site, some of the more common sites can be posted to en masse by programs such as Roost or dlvr.it. If you also have a blog there are programs such as Twitterfeed and dlvr.it that will automatically add posts about your new blogs to your social media sites.
Currently the most popular sites are Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn. LinkedIn is one of the best choices for professional networking. Pinterest is for posting photos. Twitter messages are short (less than 140 characters). Facebook is a good all around site with a wide range of potential fans. Facebook also has an ad program similar to Google Adwords.
If you are building a specific community, you should look at sites like SocialGo or Social Strata which allow you to create private communities. These allow feature rich communities with many options to choose from. Beware, they are not free or even inexpensive.
Choosing and using the social media to help promote your company is not easy. In today's connected world however, it is important and a choice we strongly recommend to our customers. If it's done well, it can give you an edge on your competition.
