Are you prepared to detach from all the gadgets, computers, and smart-devices that keep us connected this Friday? This is not an April's Fools joke. On April 1, the powers that be are calling for a social media blackout. Can we survive one day with out the connections that pay our bills? (My clients should skip to the next paragraph now) I am going to give it a try.
Here are the five things I am going to do to make sure my business still gets done and I don't miss anything while I am out.
- Scheduled posts and tweets. There are a number services that provide the ability to schedule posting your content ahead of time, but we have found Hootsuite to be the most carefree and reliable. + it's free.
- Subscribe to RSS feeds. Simple but effective way to catch up on what you have missed. Google Reader is a simple and free tool that allows you to subscribe to your favorite content to make sure you don't miss anything while you are out.
- Automated DM responses. This clever little trick will give the appearance that you are still being active on Social Media Blackout Day. It is also a good way to make a secondary pitch or drive an additional conversion. Try out Social Oomph - they also provide post scheduling
- Drink a beer and handwrite your thoughts. Why? Because posting your content to Facebook on Friday isn't going to give you love anyways. According to Dan Zarella at Hubspot, posting on Saturday is going to get you better traffic from Facebook.
- Go to the Social Media Blackout Day website and read how other folks are going to be spending their day logged off.
Now that you know you can survive a day without the juice, make the pledge.
