Yeah, I'm live blogging the conference tonite and categorizing this under Social Media when in fact this used to be a MEDIA, CAPITAL Letters city... but I've been meeting nothing but digital, new media, _______ (fill in the) media companies here all evening. The convergence that has taken place is exciting. I'm sitting in the back of the theater right now, in the Blogger's Bullpen... interesting name... don't feel like I'm warming up or anything. But Lets see how this opening session goes. Oh, Henry Blodgett is moderating a panel... should I stay? Nahhhh... wanna see the girilies.
OK. Tony Perkins just took the stage. What's nice is that this is being Webcast live and there is a live chat that you can view on large monitors throughout the conference.
So, why am I here? Because NYC is the Media capital of the world and I hope to learn a lot as we craft a Social Media Strategy for SAP Global Marketing.
Key themes that are being talked about:
- Goodbye PC Generation, Hello IM generation (ok, we all know that the MIllenials are shaping the future of digital media from this day forward)
- The revolution is not being televised (i.e., they are on the web more than TV), yeah we know this too!
- More on millenials, No to big government, no to big Media, yes to the people (yes, we are talking about UGC -- "user generated content", they just said that only 18% has the trust and respect of the national news media.
- Just introduced the CEO of MOVE Networks, John Edwards (former Novell dude).... a Utah based company which, does Video streaming on the Web, that is clean, doesn't jiump, flater, it looks like TV quality video, Holy @#$$%,this is really good. They slice video into very small streamlets and then stream each out that eliminates latency. Wow, this is amazing stuff!!! Mass audience entertainment has been disrupted thru great content, being packaged, distributed, formated and wrapped in novel ways with a different advertising model and without disruptions in QOS. I don't believe that I've seen video of this quality ever. Its increasing the Ad Recall rate bc of three things, Instant start, Hi-def and no buffering. Positioned as TV 2.0, fascinating. since they can track what you watch, they also serve up highly targeted Ads.
- Saying the new media revolution is done, its over, New Media has won.
- Kids go Mobile... we know this
- 30% of all ad eyeballs are now in the Web.
ok, nothing that we really dramatic but good foundation for tomorrow. I feel as if many in the audience may not know this stuff.
Time to go see the girlies and my beautiful wife!
