If you're not sure whether to join or not the conversation, have a look at Martha Z. Kagan presentation on Social Media. Though there's maybe too much F-words, I do think she's right doing so. It's not an easy way joining a new form of communication (I mean for professionals, not for people) such as joining a conversation, starting a think tank, commenting, and showing what's happening into your company to the Internet readers when you're stucked in a different way of working and limited by company bounds. It's a cultural disruption and eventually is hard to integrate for non agile companies. But since big companies did change their habits, why not you? Look at these slides and take what's interesting for your company (I assume that's why Marta has shared it).
