I heard about finetune from Stan Garfield. It allows you to pick any artist and build a custom playlist featuring music by your artist and related artists. They also give you good background on the artists. You can put your playlist on your blog with their player widget. A playlist is 45 songs selected by you, playable for everyone. If you lose steam or want suggestions, press the "I'm Lazy" button and they will finish your playlist.
They have featured artists and most popular artists. It is a good way to discover new music. I looked at Dylan and the top tracks were
Like a Rolling Stone
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
Blowin' In the Wind
Tangled Up In Blue
Just Like a Woman
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Mr. Tambourine Man
This list could almost be the lyrics to a Dylan song.
Dylan's related artists were Beatles, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Simon, Donovan. Good groups but I am not sure I say these are the most related. Where is The Band, Tom Petty, Traveling Wilburys, etc.? So I went to Hendrix next and the top tracks were:
Purple Haze
All Along the Watchtower
Hey Joe
The related artists from Hendrix were Cream, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd. This could get addictive. You get to hear a 30 second clip of any track to help you decide if you want to include them. What is any playlist without these three?
Stan has created two playlists that you can view at the finetune site. Like many web 2.0 sites you can have friends and make comments. You can also join the fan club of any artists. I am still listening to Hendrix. web 2.0
