So many of the athletes who are competing in this year's winter Olympics have a story about overcoming adversity. Tales of people growing up in poor families, athletes who suffered from physical ailments such as hear loss, individual's who moved to a completely different country so they could compete, people who endured tragic losses in their families, and others who worked through devastating injuries and made tremendous comebacks even though critics thought otherwise.
The common thread is that every athlete has an unwavering level of determination to succeed. And it takes that level of determination to become an Olympic athlete.
But, what about the average person? I believe that most people fail to realize how many challenges they overcome in their life.
Job loss. Financial woes. The death of a loved one. Physical and emotional problems. Divorce. I could go on but I think you get the idea. The point is we all suffer from tragic moments. We all endure hardships. We all face adversity. We all encounter obstacles that seem impossible to deal with. However, we ALL have the ability to overcome these challenges.
Selling requires a tremendous amount of determination. Obstacles loom in front of us on a regular basis. But it is what we do when faced with these barriers that will determine our level of success. A person will face the most challenging obstacle just before he achieves his final goal, and the most successful salespeople in any industry have learned to face the obstacles that get in their way. They look for new ways to connect with prospects. They are tenacious. They refuse to give up, because they know that persistence will help them achieve their goals.
Determination is not a trait reserved for Olympic athletes. We all have the ability to succeed. We can all accomplish our goals, dreams and desires. We just have to remember that we have to be willing to make the effort.
