Happy Thanksgiving, and never mind that Plymouth Rock is probably nothing more than a stroke of PR genius since it's never been proved anyone ever stepped upon it in 1620. Without it, visitors would look out across that expanse of sea in Plymouth Bay and never have that sense, true or false, that they are at or near the place where the Pilgrims actually trod.
Here is a link to the Plimouth Plantation site that features a reinactment in the daily life of Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It's no where near the rock.
And here's a link to Plymouth, Massachusetts. The center of town is kinda no where near Plimouth Plantation.
But notice the two variant spellings. Now there are some who would ad a third: Plymyth. I hear they think Thanksgiving should be a national day of mourning for all the bad things we did to the indigenous population. I couldn't disagree more... not over the bad things because I know they happened, but over the notion that we should use the one day a year we give thanks to regret some things we should think about year round. For crying out loud, at least leave Thanksgiving Day alone. The many days before it and after it we can use to advance the agenda of national guilt if you want.
