That's the latest warning from Twitter spelling out in more detail what it considers to be unacceptable behavior in its effort to rid the micro-blogging platform of spam. This includes aggressively following and unfollowing other Twitter accounts. Be forewarned: it is an offense that will get you booted from the network.
Why the heavy-handed approach? Twitter understands spam is becoming a bigger problem as usage soars; spam levels climbed to nearly 10 percent of all Tweets in August, now down to just under 1 percent as this graph shows:
One of the more pernicious tricks that's not shown here is the I-follow-you-you-follow-me rackets that new Twitter accounts use to boost their visibility. That too is a no-no, though it's unclear if they'll have much luck shaking out these undesirables. Here are a few other forbidden Twitter activities:
At Twitter, we see spamming as a variety of different behaviors that range from insidious to annoying. Posting harmful links to phishing or malware sites, repeatedly posting duplicate tweets, and aggressively following and un-following accounts to attract attention are just a few examples of spam on Twitter.
