Twitter is taking the world (well, the blog and social media technorati type world) by storm, but is it any use? Take a look at this post if you don't know what I'm on about. For Euan, Twitter made him feel safer:
"A lot of people are trying to get their heads around Twitter these days and I have to say my own enthusiasm comes and goes but one of my most significant Twitter moments came when I was on a Greyhound journey in heavy, driving snow, between New York and Washington. The fact that I knew that at any one time a lot of people were reading my tweets meant that I felt less apprehensive. "
I can understand that, and although I've done some Twittering myself, I've neglected it lately. Today is the day to give it another try, triggered partly by discussions between my Social Media Collective friends. I couldn't make the discussion Podcast below, but it is well worth a listen to hear the various views on the practical value the Twitter service can bring. One of the starting points for the podcast was Luis Saurez's post "10 Reasons Why Twitter Will Help Improve Your Already Existing Social Networks". Maggie introduces the podcast like this:
"In this episode, Dan Greenfield, Vice President of Communications for Earthlink, Luis Suarez, Knowledge Management Consultant for IBM Global Services and Tom Mandel, a technologist and poet, discuss the potential business use of SMS service Twitter. This was a really interesting podcast to moderate, but we probably could have used someone who thought Twitter was totally stupid. Just to provide some balance."
The guy they needed to provide the balance would probably be Dennis. Whether you find value or not, this is something you need to know about, because it's only going to grow in use as a service and as a component in mashups.
