I'm attending the Marketing Profs B2B Forum this week in Boston at the new and very beautiful Renaissance. The show has many great sessions and some really smart marketers talking old school and new school. I'm looking forward to the session's on Tuesday, but one thing I've already noticed...we are still preaching to the choir when it comes to social media. I participated in several conversations within sessions and in the hallway and it is very evident that:
- People WANT to "do social media"
- People have NO idea what it means to "do social media"
- The important thing for US to do is start with social media basics
What does social media 101 mean? Most folks don't know what an RSS feed is, options for blogging platforms, or how to monitor online reputations. A former client who was in the audience had to tell her neighbor the proper spelling of Flickr. I don't say these things to sound trite or invoke a sense of snobbery, instead it is a reminder to us all to take this all slowly and remember that sometimes we DO have to "spell it out".
