I'm not sure why, but I woke up this morning thinking about all of the social computing services I've signed up for over the years, only to let them go dark over time. My crappy MySpace profile (I have the whole freakin' cast of Entourage in my top friends and I don't even watch Entourage), my Pownce and Jaiku accounts to which I simply cross-post my Twitter status updates. My avatars in Habbo, Kaneva, There.com, virtualMTV, even my Second Life alternate avatar and my botched first attempt at creating a second life back in early 2006 (forgot the password and was never able to pick up where I left off.)
These are just the ones I can think of; I'm sure there are plenty of others including a Paleolithic era Friendster profile.
Please don't go look for me or try to friend me in any of these places. They're kinda like those embarrassing, zit-faced gap-toothed photos from my awkward adolescent years (don't go looking for those online either.)
Anyway, I'm sure I'm not unique -- whether because of lost interest, lack of time and attention, defection to something better or at least newer, or simply changing needs and lifestyles (even just growing up a little), I'd bet that all of us are leaving behind a trail of dead social media profiles.
So what's in your social media graveyard?
Which formerly hot (or at least formerly interesting) social media sites have you left behind?
Do you remember why you joined?
How about why you left?
Do you think you'd ever go back and try to bring your old profiles back to life?
I'd love you hear from you. Drop a comment and let's reminisce.
