Shark week surfaced to the top of the social media scene this week, with other trending social stars including the befuddling anger toward Minions and Taco Bell's new delivery system (gluttony, thy glory hath no boundaries). The travel, tech and stock exchange experienced some weird tech glitches, and we were warned to stay out of the shark's home.
That and more below, and away we go.
Minion mania
There is certainly a counterculture of people who dislike the Minions. This is one of the more even sentiment sets I've ever seen. While the majority of sentimented tweets are positive around the Minions, about 59.5%, a sizable 40.5% of sentimented tweets are negative.
In some instances people explain why they dislike Minions (for example, one person described them as tic tac-looking), others liken them to Donald Trump, but many simply write expressions like, "F#@& the Minions!"
One thing is certain. The Minions and their conversation are huge, and have made a place in pop culture. Minions garnered many mentions without acknowledgement of the upcoming film, hence solidifying their standalone, pop culture identity. Minions accumulated around 222K online mentions, and that is only from yesterday evening.
The conversation is being driven by females as they hold a 62% majority of unique Twitter authorship.
The top hashtags can be seen below. You can tell which brands (McDonalds and tic tacs) are capitalizing the most from the Minions.
Bees may never be the same without Burt
This week we said goodbye to an icon as Burt Shavitz passed away at 80 years-old. The co-founder, and face, of Burt's Bees passing garnered nearly 22K mentions as people took to their social networks to pay their respects.
The conversation proved to be equally driven across both genders with women slightly edging out men with 53% of unique Twitter authorship.
It's rare to find an individual who will so wholly submerse themselves in their company or product, but if you look at the major topics within this conversation, you'll find that Shavitz was certainly synonymous with his work.
Not cleared for social landing: United's savvy response
Nothing draws the ire of consumers quite like airlines, am I right? Just ask United as they experienced some technical difficulties this week that caused them to ground flights.
Let the record show, that faced with a system-wide glitch United certainly acted quickly and resolved the problem in a pretty timely fashion, but not before people could voice around 50K mentions.
As the day went on tweeters began to suspect that something fishy was about, as the New York Stock Exchange and the Wall Street Journal had pretty big technical issues of their own. Each meltdown had their own hashtag within the United conversation.
At the end of the day it appears that each incident was not related to any other, so we can all relax.
Ding Dong: It's Taco Bell Delivery!
If we could grade Taco Bell's newest delivery system announcement with an emoji, it would certainly be the raised hands. The announcement of delivery services in 200 location within 90 cities gave people a lot to talk about.
As the world reacted, Taco Bell delivery received about 26K online mentions. You can see that many of the selected cities were extremely hyped as they garnered trending topics with the conversation.
Dallas even got its city into our top hashtags.
The biggest source of negativity was from people who don't reside in the 90 cities. That means it's our job to make Taco Bell's delivery service so successful that it rolls-out nationwide.
The ocean's just the shark's house, and we're foolishly swimming in it
Shark Week is an American institution; fitting that it commenced this year after the 4th of July - on the day the USWNT won the World Cup. Now that the yearly programming juggernaut's conclusion is on the horizon, we look to it's social conversation to see what people had to say.
With a day left, Shark Week has already accumulated around 766K online mentions, and the top used Twitter hashtags bring us the second coming of #LeftShark:
As you can see, both Independence Day and the USWNT's World Cup win made waves in the Shark Week conversation.
You can see which conversation topics were more popular across genders in the chart below, as men led the USWNT mentions.
