If you want a tool to send messages for you, evaluate your statistics, or do anything outside of analyze Twitter traffic at a generic level, you'll need to allow access to the system.
Realize that these systems are not storing or have access to the password itself. It's the same thing that happens in Facebook, Yahoo, Open ID, etc.. You shouldn't do it without thinking, but this is not the same thing as providing someone your password.
I wouldn't say that the ONLY reason to participate in marketing activity (particularly sociial media) is to "generate a customer".
While, the end goal is to obviously generate revenue, there are many other key wins that come with social media:
1) Maintaining a customer
2) Recovering a lost customer
3) Engaging with a customer
4) Learning from prospects and customers. Tools like Twitter are excellent for testing new concepts, language, and ideas before you invest more heavily in more expensive marketing efforts.
5) Educating your customer (falls under maintaining, I guess).
I'm also a fan of starting to segment social media traffic the same way that many people segment their e-mail and marketing efforts.
Bottom line, as I believe you're saying, content and the value of what you're sending is king. If you provide info (combined with a solution) that provides value, you'll get people to read your stuff, come to your site, and generate leads, sales, and happy customers.
