You're right - there's needs to be more "carrots" for consumers before they'll feel as if they want and/or need location-based services. It has to more than just coupons.
Chris Brogan's post on whether a social media crash is coming is skewed by the fact he spends so much time on social media, a necessary evil given his job and status as one of the leading social media voices. For the rest of us, the "crash" really isn't looming on the horizon. Here's my response to Brogan's thesis, in which I suggest that balance is the key to anything we do professionally and personally.
It is true that there is a growing divide between the "pros" and "amateurs" but I don't think this suggest the amateurs are going away because they're fatigued or bored. The blogopshere continues to attract new blood, while other platform such as Tumblr emerged as more user-friendly alternatives.
