MADRID, ES, July 28, 2026 –Metricool, a global social media management platform, today released its 2026 YouTube Study, analyzing 799,718 videos from 71,177 accounts worldwide to examine how video performance, audience behavior and content strategy are evolving on the platform.
Shorts has become an increasingly central part of YouTube’s ecosystem. Earlier this year, YouTube reported that Shorts now averages 200 billion daily views and introduced additional formats, including image posts, into the Shorts feed. That scale makes it important for brands and creators to understand whether growing visibility is translating into stronger viewer retention, meaningful interactions and revenue.
Key findings include:
- Long-form video views increased 76% YoY, while engagement fell 45%, showing that greater reach is not necessarily translating into deeper audience interaction.
- Shorts views rose 127% YoY, but viewers spent three times less time watching each Short, signaling that brands have more opportunities to be discovered but less time to capture attention.
- The Shorts feed generated 61% of YouTube views, validating short-form video as the platform’s primary discovery engine.
- Monetization is declining despite higher view counts, with ad impressions, monetized playbacks and estimated ad revenue all falling by more than 50%.
- Only 11% of accounts with fewer than 10,000 subscribers moved into a higher tier, showing that YouTube growth is possible but typically gradual.
- 83% of interactions occurred within the first 10 days, highlighting the importance of driving early engagement while optimizing content for longer-term discovery.
“YouTube is delivering more reach than it did a year ago, but reach alone is no longer a measure of impact,” said Juan Pablo Tejela, CEO and Co-Founder of Metricool. “Shorts are giving brands and creators more opportunities to be discovered, while long-form video remains essential for building deeper relationships. The challenge in 2026 is creating content that does not just earn a view, but gives audiences a reason to stay and build loyalty with either creator or brand.”
The takeaway is to use each format with a clear purpose. Based on findings from the report, Metricool recommends using Shorts to reach new audiences and long-form video to build deeper connections, while prioritizing strong openings, audience retention and consistency over content volume. Optimized titles, thumbnails and descriptions can also help videos continue generating views beyond their initial performance window.
