MADRID, ES, October 29, 2026 –Metricool, a global social media management platform, today released its 2026 Social Media & Ecommerce Report, analyzing how 72 notable ecommerce brands, including BÉIS, Bombas, Ruggable and YETI, use Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube to showcase products, engage consumers and support the path to purchase.
The findings point to a disconnect between the content brands publish and how they facilitate purchases, with overtly promotional posts often performing the weakest. Although TikTok Shop lets consumers purchase without leaving the app, organic TikTok posts were five times more likely to solely name a retail partner rather than carry a Shop tag. The report also found that results drop sharply outside Instagram: a typical organic Instagram post generated 293 interactions, compared with 74 on TikTok, nine on Facebook and eight on YouTube.
As brands plan their holiday campaigns, the findings offer a benchmark for evaluating the formats, content types and shopping pathways they use to connect with consumers. Rather than relying on promotional messaging alone, brands can use platform-specific data to assess which content resonates with their audiences and where opportunities to improve the shopping journey may exist.
Key findings include:
- TikTok Shop tags appear in just 1.8% of organic TikTok posts: By comparison, 9.3% mentioned a retail partner such as Sephora or Target, suggesting a gap between organic content and in-app shopping.
- The hard sell performs worst: Explicit promotional content accounted for just 3.2% of posts and was the worst-performing content type relative to each brand’s own average. Community posts that invite participation, along with tutorials, performed slightly better than average, yet that was missing from 33 of the 72 brands.
- TikTok Shop is mostly a paid tool: 84% of TikTok Shop-tagged posts were ads, showing brands use the feature mainly in paid content rather than organic posts.
- Instagram is where brands actually show up: 97% of brands posted on Instagram in August, compared with 81% on TikTok, 76% on Facebook and 44% on YouTube. This is despite every brand having a TikTok account and 92% having a YouTube channel.
- A bigger audience doesn’t mean more engagement: Beauty & Personal Care brands earned a median of 1,074 interactions per Instagram post, nearly seven times the 162 earned by Food & Beverage brands, which have the largest Instagram following in the study.
- Calls to action don’t always move the needle: More than a third of captions (36%) ask the audience to do something, but within the same brand, captions with a call to action performed the same as those without one.
“Social media plays an increasingly important role in how ecommerce brands showcase products and connect consumers with the path to purchase,” said Juan Pablo Tejela, CEO and Co-Founder of Metricool. “Our findings show that brands have built TikTok audiences, but when it comes time to sell, they’re still pointing viewers to other retailers instead of the shop built into the app. And heading into the holidays, the data is clear: the hard sell is the weakest thing a brand can post.”

Methodology
Metricool analyzed 3,234 posts published by 72 U.S. ecommerce brands across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube between August 1 and 31, 2026. The sample covered seven ecommerce categories: fashion and apparel, home decor and furniture, consumer tech and gadgets, beauty and personal care, pet products, outdoor and fitness gear, and food and beverage/CPG. Performance figures are medians for organic posts. Interactions are defined per platform: likes and comments on Instagram and YouTube, plus shares on Facebook, and plus shares and saves on TikTok. The sample is intended to provide a snapshot of social media habits and strategies, not a measurement of the entire ecommerce industry.
