Google + is the new kid on the social media block and is causing a bit of excitement among my fellow digital geeks. It's only be around 3 weeks and it has nearly notched up 18 million users and it's anticipated that this will zoom up to 100 million by the end of the year.
It looks a bit like Facebook with a stream of updates from people you circle which is the equivalent of following. So on first look why would you move from Facebook, afterall that's where all your friends are?
Hangouts - You can have group video chats with up to 10 people. Facebook may have introduced 1 to 1 video chat but for groups you still need to use the Skype paid for service.
Circles - You can add anyone you like whether you know them or not. You pop them in a Circle it's like a group or a category which you can call anything you like. You can then post your update specifically to different circles. It will make it much easier to separate work and friends.
Adverts - There aren't any! I haven't suffered from any spam yet either. Brands aren't allowed on Google + yet but they are inviting businesses to sign up for their Beta programme.
It's early days but if Google + does take off like they anticipated there are implications for search, it's already driving traffic to my little site and I haven't even posted any blog updates on it yet.
If you are looking to try out Google + for your business I would hold fire, according to the unofficial Google + directory there are only 38k people from the UK and the majority of those are tech types. There is still plenty of opportunity to be found in Facebook with 700 million users!
Have you tried Google + yet? What do you think of it?
I will be keeping an eye on what's going on and updating this blog with future developments so if you want to make sure you don't miss out then sign up for the monthly newsletter.
I still have a few invites left so if you want one just pop your Gmail address in the comments box below.
