Because you folks are so generous with your thoughts and writing (and, maybe because we get lots of readers and you'd like to grow the old personal brand a bit), Social Media Today now has more posts automatically submitted everyday than we can possibly use. Choosing which ones to feature has become an editorial challenge (and pleasure). At some point in the not too distant future, I'm going to create some additional "frontpages" around specific disciplines like "Public Relations" and "Blogging" but until I find the time, here are some tips that can greatly improve your chances of getting featured.
1. Write something really broad and interesting about a topic that is of immediate concern to lots of readers. Newsy analysis.
2. Write something so small and narrowly focused (but tied to social media) that I can't possibly resist it. Jung, French cinema, contemporary classical music, Taiwanese filmmakers. (I also give points to foreigners who write in English and manage to get their points across, even if the English isn't perfect.)
3. After you add your feed to the Autopost, upload a headshot of yourself and add a few lines of bio to your profile. Your chances of getting on the frontpage are very slim if you don't do these two things because it makes me think you might be a drive-by blogger fishing for readers who really isn't committed to the "community."
4. Add your entire feed. With rare exceptions, I never select partial feeds that link back to a blog. Why? Same reason as above, this is a real community, not an aggregator web site designed to send traffic back to your blog. There is a button in the Autopost setup that says "Add URL." Remember to click that and the system will automatically put in a link back to your blog at the end of the article.
5. Leave comments for others, participate.
6. If you're selling something, tell us what it is upfront. We're all selling something so don't try to bullshit the bullshitters.
