I recently had the pleasure of talking to Lisa Baird. Lisa was named the Chief Marketing Officer of The United States Olympic Committee in 2009. She was responsible for really building the Team USA brand which she built almost exclusively through social media. You'll hear the story of an incredible career about how she grew through corporate America but changed industries time and time again to actually propel her career forward.
The Story of Lisa's Career
Being a Fast Learner
Building Team USA brand
What are your tips for changing verticals within your career?
"I've worked in a number of industries and I do think that's highly unusual. It's also a huge challenge. Even if they change companies, people develop a comfort level and a reputation in an industry. It's much easier to make shifts within companies within a specific industry. If you're going across industries, you're really going to challenge yourself but this can also be very rewarding."
How has digital changed over the span of your career?
"When I started my career in digital, the internet was really only just gearing up. To be able to see how far and how quickly it's changed in such a short time, it's almost mind-boggling. Companies now are getting bolder and more courageous with how they are using different forms of digital media including social media to develop these life long relationships with people. This is giving companies immense freedom to really be successful. Companies now often use it as a mainstream tool for marketing, sales, business enablement and customer relationship management."
- "Your social voice can be different depending on the platform you're using and the audience you're reaching."
- "I'm a Mom and I'm a wife. I love to use social media for my lifestyle and I don't view it as interruptive."
- "Take the lessons you've learned and the experiences you've had and apply them to new situations."
