Facebook sent out an email today entitled:
Facebook will be sending you less email - learn why
We're trying out a new feature to reduce the amount of email you receive from Facebook. Starting today, we are turning off most individual email notifications and instead, we'll send you a summary only if there are popular stories you may have missed. You can turn individual emails back on and restore all your original settings at any time.
Thanks, The Facebook Team
This comes after some major privacy shifts, the subscribe button, and new efforts really hone and individualize the Facebook experience. It seems Facebook has realized that individual profiles have become so inundated, so clunky, that to maintain widespread use drastic measures needed to be taken.
Streamline Your Facebook Experience
Now when you log into a friend's page you can see new buttons, which allows you to help classify the person to streamline your newsfeed. This makes suggestions to you based on you profile settings and also gives you the option to create a new list.
Reacting to Google Plus?
This major shift comes after google plus released their "answer" to Facebook with circles, which has been widely praised for hitting the social network nail on the head: people are many things on social media. The fact that Facebook has seen this and has decided to answer with more ways to streamline an experience without inundating a person with too many friends in a feed, or even too many emails is a clear sign that Facebook is not taking the launch of a rival social network lying down.
