Sometimes, if you have a business or have an area of expertise, patting yourself on the back when blogging can be most beneficial. This is different than boasting about how good you are. It comes down to just plain good old common sense of saying, "Hey, I have some skills that may be beneficial to someone out there."
Here are a few examples where I have picked up some work in my area and not by blatantly trying to market myself.
As a freelance writer, I often like to take the time out from formal writing and just do some blogging. Many times I come across posts that are related to my field of work where I can offer some suggestions or some help to someone. For example, there are times where a blogger may need to hire a writer but doesn't know what to ask for or expect. On occasion because of my expertise I have been asked to do the job for them. I actually have a few full time clients that I have picked up this way.
If you have some experience in an area you are blogging about it is always most important to make this known. It is very helpful to fellow bloggers when they can rely on some good knowledge gained from a blog. In addition to this it makes for a much better working relationship in the end, because the individual interested in what you may have to offer has already got a feel for what you may be able to do to help him. It is far better for him than having to start cold looking for the services he needs.
In addition to this though it doesn't have to be a skill either that you possess. There are many instances where people require the services of a consultant. Let's assume that you were into web designing and although maybe you are not now actively involved you possess a wealth of information. What you have to say could be very useful for the blogger that is searching for those types of services. You could certainly offer your services as a consultant.
This is just one example of many. If you gave it some good thought I bet you would be able to come up with lots of ideas that would be perfect from a consulting aspect where it could be a win-win situation for you and other bloggers.
You also have to realize too that by discussing this in your blog, it could be picked up on the search engines and your talents could be discovered by potential clients without you even actively promoting yourself.
So what skills or knowledge do you currently possess that you could share as a consultant?
