Sony has sold a range of its VR patents to Meta as part of what seems to be a shift away from VR as a long-term bet.
According to Road to VR and first reported by ZDNet Korea, Sony transferred 43 U.S. patents relating to AR and VR systems.
As per Road to VR: “The patents cover things such as information processing specific to XR applications, head-mounted displays and various XR glasses types, filed by Sony from 2010 to 2022. According to the Confirmatory Assignment agreement signed by the two companies in December 2025, a total of 419 global patents are expected to be subject to transfer.
That suggests that Sony is getting out of the AR and VR business, with Meta being the beneficiary as it takes over the majority of Sony’s headset learnings and systematic rights. This could help to advance Meta’s own VR ambitions.
However, Meta has also seemingly scaled back its VR projects as it shifts focus to artificial intelligence and continues to build advanced AI systems.
Though Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently explained that the company’s pivot from the VR-led metaverse was not as reactive as it may have initially seemed.
At last month’s Meta Connect conference, Zuckerberg explained: “... when we started building glasses, we thought at the time that the metaverse, this idea of bringing the physical and digital worlds together, we thought that that would come first, and that advanced AI would come later. But now, it is actually quite clear that personal superintelligence will not only come first, it will be much bigger and more important.”
As such, Zuckerberg and his team still see VR as a key shift, just not the main focus right now.
Indeed, at the same conference, Meta shared an overview of its next-level VR glasses, which are five times lighter than the current Meta Quest 3 headset.

The new device impressed many, and it could be that through the integration of AI and VR, Zuckerberg’s metaverse vision will be more powerful than even he had initially imagined.
With an expanded set of patents and insights from Sony, that could better position Meta to be the key leader in that future space.
